Who actually numbered the parts on the Artillery Lugers?

A coworker is Iranian and reads Farsi. She translated the numbers and script on the gun. She also thought it was a very interesting piece of history. The script on the top strap reads "Manufactured in the weapons making plant at Doraj (I probably misspelled that) The gun itself is numbered 3568 along with the stock and all parts match except for the magazine which is numbered 3771

So I'm assuming the Germans shipped the Persians the guns and then the Persians restamped them. Is this correct?

Hi,

Most unlikely. The Persian contract artilleries were made by Mauser in Oberndorf am Neckar and would have stamped them according the contract with Persia.

A contract would have been made up specifiying how the guns should be marked and how the acceptance of the guns would be arranged.

For larger contracts it was not unusual to have representatives of the contract partner/country at the factory for extended periods of time. During the production of the Turkish rifle contracts in the late 19th century, Mauser even built a Turkish-style house for the Turkish officer in charge of acceptance.
