1920 DWM w/Capture papers, holster, belt & ammo
 

Before I close the door on this "opportunity" I would like to throw it out to whoever might be interested.
I received a phone call today from a gunsmith buddy who told me there was an elderly gentleman in his shop with an extremely nice Luger for sale. He went on to say that the Luger looked new, original finish, had a 1920 stamp over the chamber with a DWM toggle. It has a four digit serial and is a 9mm. There are two matching mags, a holster that is properly dated with a belt and the capture papers along with a box of original 9mm ammo with one bullet missing. He is asking a whopping $6000.00 for the rig, which is far away from my thinking, but as I said, before I close the door, possibly someone on the forum might be interested. If so, let me know, and I will get you two together.

At that price, it had better have the instruction manual, factory warranty and the ammo should be loaded with silver bullets.

I agree completely that the price is out of sight. If you notice, I called his price a "WHOPPING" $6000.00. I just wanted to throw it out there in case someone might be interested.

I asked my gunsmith buddy the same question. Keep in mind the owner of the Luger is not a collector nor is he a fancier or firearms. He inherited the Luger from a family member who alledgedely received it from a WWII vet. How and where he came up this price is a mystery. Certainly not the gunsmith, as he called me and asked if he should offer $3000 or so which I agreed was the outer limit.

You can always as any price for a Luger, the only problem might be, would somebody be willing to pay your price.

Some folks get it into their mind that their Luger or in this case a Luger rig, is worth "big" money and become highly offended if you try to explain it's real value. I am sure this guy has a "friend" or relative who told him it was worth about $5 to 6,000. Of course the "friend" has no idea what any Luger is values at.

The family vet over the years might have told his relatives that this gun was captured from an important Nazi, such as an army general, SS officer, fighter pilot, tank commander or political figure. That story makes the rig worth more $$$.

A few years ago I bought a common 1915 DWM military Luger from a guy who insisted that the intertwined letters on the toggle were the initials of a general and this piece was a highly valued collectable. His father who brought it home from the war told his family those were some general's initials on the Luger. Took a lot of explaining using pictures of other Lugers to finally convince him his family pistol was not special. He originally wanted $3,000 for the general's personal handgun.

I guess it is kind of nice that Lugers carry some sort of mistique from generation to generation. Let's let that carry on as long as possible; it's kind of fun to hear all the wonderful stories of where the super rare were found and who they belonged to, like the high ranking officer with the initials DWM or a General who was issued a chrome Luger.
