you'r right.
once I get my hands on some .30Luger rounds, then it will be loaded...

Tac:

If the Luger was in fact loaded. The extractor should show "loaded" not
"geladen".

Tac:

Point well taken. If cartridge is chambered extractor will be extended
with whatever inscription.

I heard DWM 1920 extractor may either show LOADED or GELADEN..... I cannot remember where I read that. No references at hand and my memory could be wrong. I'm sure my instance shows GELADEN. If extractor shows LOADED, should thumb safety show SAFE instead of GESICHERT?

k7grc -- Could you post a close-up picture of "GERMANY" in front of the frame?

========

P.S. k7grc's instance does show "SAFE" on the left ear. So the "LOADED" on extractor makes perfect sense.

One thing is unclear... say this gun has "SAFE" and "LOADED", the intended destination is clearly U.S. of A. ..... could GERMANY be applied just like the DWM monogram on the toggle? I mean, could it be applied before the gun was blued, so no halo on it?

"GERMANY" with halo is shallow on the frame.... obviously applied after the frame had been hardened. I assume "GERMANY" without halo (on "LOADED/SAFE" gun) should be deep, if the previous assumption is correct.

Comments and pictures are welcome.

hope this helps.

Both the 1908 and 1923 look better than they should to me. I wish my Winchesters I have from that period looked as good.

I haven't dissassembled them yet, to check to see if all numbers match internally. All exterior numbers match. Even the magazine in the 1908 matches.

thanks for any input.

Thanks for the picture. Yes, this "GERMANY" stamp is deep without halo. I would assume it's correct... but I've been in this field too short to see many samples. I found the main technique of gun collecting is observation & comparison of huge volume of guns, but that takes time. Many collectors have been in this field before I was born, their experience is priceless.

Gordon,

Thanks very much for the look at your vary nice 20DWM Safe/Loaded, it is a new number to the database.

Alvin,

1906 American Eagles usually have an extractor marked LOADED. 20DWM (the preferred designation for the variation formerly known as "1923 Commercial") usually have an extractor marked GELADEN. Occasionally a 20DWM will be found marked SAFE and LOADED; very occasionally these are found with American Eagles on the chamber. Conventional wisdom has it that these were provided by special order.

In 1921 a series of 2,000 pistols were assembled including the range sn 89734-91531, marked Safe/Loaded. These were a special order by the firm A.F. Stoeger; Gordon's gun is one of these.

Good heavens Gordon! Push up the extractor and read what it says!
