Reline?
 

I have a 1939 S42 which could be all matching except for the fact that a shade tree Luger smith put a deep dent in the original barrel when my cousin had it replaced because he felt it was too pitted. He sold it to me years later and sent the original mangeled barrel with it. Everything else matches so would it be feasible to reline the original barrel to restore the gun? It would still have a visable outward dent but it would be functional. Has anyone had any success with Luger relining?

If the "dented" barrel is not the original matching numbered factory barrel, it makes little sense to reline it, as this would cost almost as much as having a new unnumbered barrel installed. TH

Speaking of Relining barrels... has anyone found a new source for getting this type of work done... I know that a gunsmith (whose name escapes me at the moment-darn these senior moments) who worked out of the Mentor/Cleveland Ohio area used to offer this service, but I believe he has retired...

If anyone has a link or contact information to a new source of this service, I am sure there are many who would like to know besides me...

Agree that this would not make sense if the barrel in question was not the original. In this case, however, it is the original correctly numbered barrel. After the initial butchery was complete the shade tree smith returned the damaged original along with the "repaired" pistol. My cousin actaully never recovered from the trauma of this experience and only sold the Luger to me because he couldn't live with it any more.
Perhaps this would be an opportunity to fill a niche in Luger smithing. I"ve relined a few 22 rifle barrels with good results. This would be a big leap forward....but do you think there would be much demand for Luger relining?
