Is a Magazine Worth This Much?

A Luger magazine (item #101934)just sold on eBay for $233.81, and was described as:

"Luger clip in good condition. There is one bad spot on the clip about the size of a small finger print (see photo). This is not a reproduction. The end piece is aluminum and stamped: with the number 5499, a small B|90 and a scroll S. I was told at a gun show that the scroll S would indicate this clip belongs to a K-date Luger, but I am not sure of this."

Is this a reasonable price for this magazine? Could someone with a knowledge of magazine values give us a little imput on this subject?

Re: Is a Magazine Worth This Much?

The scriptic S magazine is from 1934 production lugers. I don't know when they dropped the S from magazines but the scriptic S was dropped from the outsie of pistols around the first half of production. The S appears on the inside of lugers at least into 1937 as I have a toggle with the S under it on a 1937 luger. Essentially, this is an early Mauser production luger magazine. It is the first S marked mag I have seen--I did not know they put the S on the magazines, too. Last Kdate mag I saw for sale was around $150 and that was five years or so ago. I would have thought 190-200 would be a fair price range given the condition so $233 is not far from the mark. Just another very very popular luger mag -- the K dates being near the top of the popularity scale. Given the seller did not even know it is a magazine and not a "clip" and had taken it to a gun show, it is surprising he did not have it nabbed from him for $40 at the gun show.
