markings on byf41 luger

Hi there, was hoping somebody could let me know about the markings on a BYF41 PO8. I have tried to attach some photos using the box below without success, so will describe the markings for now. they appear on the barrel and frame......NPv together with the letters NTT . the N and P are joined together and the v is lower case and appears just underneath the P . there is also a crest/eagle underneath the NPv ( i have tried looking in the proof mark section but it doesnt seem to be shown) hoping someone can help. thanks very much kevin

Kevin,
* NPv = Nitro Proof of Wien (Vienna), Austria. It will be found together with a Habsburg eagle bearing a "2" (1918 to date) on its breast shield. This per J.Walters, The Luger Book, Pg.180, Item N21.
* No idea what the "NTT" signifies. Maybe an importer??
* Hadn't seen an out of sequence series of WaA135 and proof marks on the right hand receiver before.......???

Nice byf 41 Kevin. Has it been refinished?

I shudder to think that it may have been de-activated because you live in the UK. If so, my condolences.

We have a number of your countrymen who are longtime members of this forum.

Welcome aboard.

If this is a true byf 41; should it be dated "1941"? Just wondering.....
Regards,
ark

Interesting catch ark... all of the byf 41 Lugers I have seen had just the number 41 over the chamber. This is a departure from that method.

Has anyone else ever seen a byf Luger with a 4 digit year stamped over the chamber?

John
Interesting. I have never seen a byf with a 4 digit date. A Banner and a Krieghoff but no byf. Bill

hi again, i really appreciate all the info from everyone, its been very helpful. hi john, yes, it is refinished (before i bought i asked if it had been refinished / reworked in any way, the reply was that he was sure it wasnt). does refinishing devalue the gun in any way ? there has also been some filing done on the underside of the barrel where the witness mark would have been, i would post some photos but the message when i try states that the file is too big. hope someone can help again thanks kevin

Use the Microsoft Office Picture Manager to view the file. Then use the EDIT mode to reduce the size of the photo by percentage. (Start with 10%) and save the image until the photo size is under 200Kbytes... that is the limit for photos uploaded into the forum server. Then once the photo is below 200K in size try uploadiing it again.

refinishing does dramatically lower the value of a collectible firearm. In the case of Lugers, it is almost by half, depending on how much buffing was done. Of course any modifications, such as filing would also lower collector value. But then that makes it an ideal gun for shooting, since you don't want to shoot a collectible very much... you might break something... and any replaced part lowers the value even more than refinishing.

hi john, thanks again for the info, couldnt have done it without your help. i'm very new to computers....dont know what i'm doing half the time ! i have enclosed some photos of the offending areas, could they be anything to do with the deactivation process ? regards kevin

John Sabato 02-27-2008 11:58 AM

Thanks TAC, No I didn't try to email you... maybe Kevin did.

Kevin,

I don't know how you enclosed the photos but they aren't here... if you have questions about the process please ask. We are curious to see your Luger (Deactivated or not).
