More marking help please
Thanks in advance for all the help you guys provide!
Saw what I think is a 1920 Commercial today with the following marking on the front grip strap: B.1.R.C.3.6 The 6 is in a smaller font than the rest of the numbers and letters. Gun has a 4 digit serial number, 9MM, no chamber date, DWM. If you can shed some light, I would sure appreciate it. Thanks, CB |
Hi CB,
B.1.R.C.3.6. Translates to: Bavarian 1st Infantry Regt. Company 3 weapon #6. What makes you think it's a 1920 Commercial? The only way that these markings could be on a 1920 Alphabet commercial is if the upper half was put on an Imperial frame. It's entirely possible that what you saw was a 1908 Ist Issue. There would be no chamber date and the proofs would be on the left side of the receiver. It wouldn't have a stock lug and the serial numbering would be hidden much like that of a commercial. Ron |
Ron, thanks for the reply. I am sure you are correct. I didn't take the time and get the books out and look at the proofs. I will get another look and check them out. I don't remember a proof on the left side of the barrel. Serial number was on the front of the frame and on the bottom of the barrel.
Gun was brought back from WWII in a 1941 dated P08 holster. Again, thanks for the info. I DO appreciate it. CB |
Look on the left side of the upper half. I have a first model and Ron is right. They are easily mistaken for a commercial. The stock ramp is the giveaway The original 08s didn't have one. many of these early 08s were unit marked

Chris,
Photos of one of my 1st Issue P.08s for reference. Note the proofs on the left side of barrel extension/receiver. Also, Commercials will have Crown N proofs, 1st Issue will not. http://forum.lugerforum.com/lfupload...ssue_copy1.jpg http://forum.lugerforum.com/lfupload/1st_issue_2_.jpg http://forum.lugerforum.com/lfupload...sue_proofs.jpg Ron |
We have a winner. I distinctly remember the first proof. I will get another look at the gun and check the others.
Thanks VERY much for the help. I need to get back into Lugers and study!! Thanks again! |
