thread in barrel

Is thread inside the front of the barrel under the front sight common in lugers? I have one with such, as if for a silencer.

No it is not common... likely a gunsmith adaptation at some point in its life. I have only seen one factory luger that was designed to be used with a silencer that had a removeable front sight band based on a spring loaded catch. It used to belong to the forum's owner John D. but I believe he has traded that item. It was Luger of the Month once during the time we had that feature.

Thanks for the info, John. This one is threaded on the inside of the sight housing and is non-removable. Just curious as to why there would be thread in the first place. From what I understand, silencers were very uncommon until after WW2. The barrel in question is on a 1920 commercial 30 cal. with no serial # on the barrel. Maybe a replacement barrel?

Hi,

A possible reason for the thread is to fit a suppressor so that the gun will cycle on blanks. Movie/prop gun history?

Looks like the same muzzle as on this gun...???...

Maybe this Luger was converted to play in the "horns" section of an orchestra...???...:D :D :D

You guys don't miss a thing!

My USB is on the fritz so I "borrowed" the muzzle pic as per chance but the sight on the pistol in question is a bit different, more rounded.

The horn adaptation is interesting but in mine the thread is on the inside

Don't know about prop/gun history, I doubt it was used for a movie, not much movie making around these parts ...

The .30 luger would be more likely to have an inside threaded silencer attachment because there is a bit more steel than the 9mm...

The gun that I spoke of had an external thread.

Is it be possible that a .30 cal barrel could be machined to a larger .380 cal or 9 mm, hence the threads?
