Can anyone ID this proof?
I am building a shooter with a 12" barrel and recently purchased a receiver with a 4" barrel that will be removed. The receiver is dated 1940 and has the proper proof marks on the right side to be off a 1940/42. The odd proof is on the underside of 4" barrel. It is a 623 over an eagle. I have looked in the five books I have, and cannot find that proof anywhere. Can anyone shed any light on this proof mark? BTW the receiver is nickled or chromed. Does anyone know if that can be removed?

I seem to remember a eagle 623 being discussed on Jan Still's forum, it was heck in Ohio's gun.
You can take the nickle off, but the brass under it has to be buffed, so I've read.... |

E/623 is an acceptance stamp found on Steyr manufactured replacement P08 barrels made during WW II. Jan |
Many thanks for the reply from the two very distinguished gentleman. Had I known I was going to get such a high level reply, I would have asked many more questions.
Thanks, Mike |
