Toggle opperation question

Hello all,

I have a Toggle question. Being new at this, I have been reading quite a few threads. Thanks to all of you who post so much information.

I have a 1913 DWM. I noticed in the videos done by Shadowdog that the toggle lock in the up position when the magazine is empty. This was demonstrated in the take down and reassembly videos. My luger toggle will not lock in that position, mag in or out. Is there a problem? If so, what can I do about it?

It seems to shoot just fine, although the original mag with the wooden plug will not feed. I purchased two replacement mags that work great.

regards,
Henry

Henry, either your hold open is broken / not working as the army required the hold open in 1913 after serial number 3700a. If your serial number is earlier than this, it is possible it never had a hold open and was not retrofitted like many, but not all earlier lugers.

Thank you Ed. How do I check to see if it had or should have a hold open?

Regards,
Henry

Henry,

Look inside the frame and compare to these two examples.

Thanks Dwight. It looks like it does have a holdopen. Should it be replaced?

Dwight, thanks to your photos, I was able to locate the holdopen. I have removed and cleaned it which helped. I also discovered that it might be the replacement magazines I purchased. The are new made replacements and when inserted, the mags do not always push the holdopen spring up into place.

Thanks again for the help, Henry

You have identified the problem exactly... some aftermarket mags do not reach the appropriate point with the mag loading button to properly operate the holdopen... get yourself an FXO type (milled not stamped) magazine and your shooting and holdopen problems should disappear...
