Artillery Luger Regiment Marks?
 

I am brand new to the forum and a new Luger collector. I have acquired a 1916 dated Artillery Luger with markings on the grip strap. I was told that they were Regiment Marks. Is there anyway to find out the history of the regiment marked on my gun? The markings are as follows: 122.R.121.5. The gun is all matching including the magazine and has the adjustable front sight. I would list it's condition about 90%.

Hi Ron,

Welcome to the forum. Your unit mark would translate to the 122nd Infantry Regiment 121st company weapon #5. The problem being is that there weren't 121 Companies in a Regiment. Could this be a typo? Can you post some photos?

I'm sorry, it's 12.5, not 121.5

That is much better, 122nd Infantry Regiment 12 Company weapon #5. Approx. 5% of 1916 LP.08s were unit marked, re: Jan Still's Imperial Lugers.

In 1916 the 122nd Fussilier Regt was attached to the 105th Infantry Division.

The 105th Div. was on the Eastern front in 1916.

Bulgaria, Macedonia and in Galicia: Lost 26 officers and 1165 men and moved to Courland.

In 1917 the 122nd Fus. Regt. was transferred to the 243rd Infantry Division on the Western Front.

Aisne.

Meuse Hill, where the 122nd had more heavy losses.

Meuse left bank

In 1918 took part in the Battle of Picardy where 122nd lost 207 men and was withdrawn.

Third Battle of the Somme, and lost 400 to POWs.

Thank you very much for researching the history of my gun for me. I find the information facinating and it really makes the gun much more interesting when you know it's history. It sounds like it is quite rare if only 5% of the 1916 Lugers were regiment marked. I think I will hold onto it!
