Newbie questions
Is there any quality difference, as a trend, between different Lugers (German, Finnish, Swiss, Belgian, etc)? How about year or time period (early lugers, WWI lugers, 1930's lugers, etc)? How about military vs. commerical contract? What should be one looking for in a luger and what should be afraid of?
Thanks! |
Tom welcome to the forum. yes, huge differences, lugers were made for almost 50 years, by many manufacturers. (no belgian lugers that I know of)
Best answer I can give is read through many different threads and see what kind of lugers you like :) Ed |
I always default to Ed
He is of course correct, many differences between lugers. What you want to get from your hobby is most important. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, really holds true with lugers. Pick an area or areas you are attracted to and jump in, just a word of warning, the high end of our hobby is currently experiencing issues with fakes and you should tread carefully. It is not so much recently produced guns but from what we are seeing older creations that are surfacing after years of storage. Get help here and from the friends you will meet on the forum before expensive purchases. I guess I would suggest you pick a Luger type you like and do like Ed says read everything you can on this forum on that particular Luger variation. I would invest in ( recent) books that cover the gun type your interested in. Avoid the temptation to buy spur of the moment, doing research and then coming back to the gun. With the advent of clear pictures, you should be able to get a pretty good idea of what to look for. It may seem that we are awash with fakes, but this really isnâ??t true, our hobby is flourishing. The value of all lugers is going up yearly, they make good investments and if you like history, you will be hard pressed to find another avenue for your pleasure. Even reworks are catching on, some commanding high prices. I like browsing the Simpson LTD web site http://www.simpsonltd.com there you will find hundreds of lugers and get an idea of the retail prices. Welcome to the forum Vern |
