Advice for new owner
 

I just acquired a luger. It is a 1936 Swiss Waffenfabrik Bern with matching parts and in fairly good condition. Any guesses on value? Can I shoot it or is it best as a collectible only?

If you provide pictures, a USA value could be guessed (you have no location, so we don't know where you live); and without pictures; guess for value or if collectable is totally up in the air.

Did you pay a collectable price or??

I didn't pay for it. It was my uncle's and I didn't know he owned it prior to his death so I have no idea about its origins. I'll get some pictures up tomorrow if you need them.

The Luger you have pictured is a 1936 S/42 which is a code for Mauser, not Waffenfabrik Bern. A very nice Luger in excellent condition.

Thanks, I definitely don't know much about collectible firearms. Prior to this luger, the only guns I own are a M1A1 I use for target shooting and a rugged bolt-action 16-gauge for home defense.

So this is a pre-war issued Wehrmacht P08 in good condition? And it has too much collectible value to shoot around with?

If it is all matching and original, it is not worth it for you to shoot and possibly damage it. Be smarter to buy a shooter and keep this one, or sell this one and buy 2 shooters ;)

You might want to review to get an idea of price ranges...keep in mind they are a retail, dealer shop with their mark-ups..but it will give you the high end of market pricing.

If you want to shoot it, strongly suggest you buy a replacement toggle train and ejector on e-bay and install them when you wish to shoot. When done, clean the piece and re-install the original components. I do that when shooting my collectables.
