Luger Jamming
 

Hi

I have a 1916 Luger that has feeding problems with afull clip and down to where there are 4-5 rounds remaining.

This happens with commercial loads. When operating the slide it is very hard to pull back with a full magazine.

This happens with the magazine that came with the gun and a reproduction that I bought .

Any Thoughts ?

What sort of problems. Do the rounds get stuck, do they stovepipe, etc..?

With full magazine the rounds are picked up by the bolt, start to move forward, tilt slightly up and jam against the throat.

As the magazine empties it feeds better but occasionally the link will stop moving forward leaving action open about a quarter of an inch. The link is slightly bowed at this time - not all the way flat..

With my aging eyes it is still fairly accurate.

A new mainspring would not hurt anything.
I have a original '37 doing the same.
It is common to have this problem with bent mag lips, but the mainspring will go, sometimes and you have tried other mags.
They are inexpensive and there is research info here on them.

Try another mag before you blame the pistol. 90% (unscientific made up figure on my part, but probably close) of autoloader feed problems are due to the magazine.

Here is where to start looking:

Ammo is too short. With round nose ammo, it should be no shorter that 1.169 inches.

Ammo too hot for springs in your Luger.

Ammo too cold for springs in your Luger.

Mag spring worn out.

Main Spring out of spec.

I agree with Henry. I would try another mag or two. I suspect the feed lips are spread. The strong mag spring has great pressure fully loaded. I would try to find a Mec Gar mag. If it does the same thing explore other areas but not untill you try another quality mag.
