Black Widow Photo
Ralph S. refers to this byf 41 P.08, after a certain arachnid.
:roflmao:  ;) http://forum.lugerforum.com/lfupload/byf_41_bw.jpg |
well, I am NOT a big fan of the "black widow" name, but that is too cool. Well done ;)

To be honest, I like the name. I know, I know, it is incorrect but is pretty cool none the less.
This is a newbie question, but why was the specific name "black widow" chosen. I have heard it was just a marketing gimic to make it more desirable, but how does the name relate to the luger other than the "black" part? |
what the hell does jesse jackson got to do with this topic :rtfm: Sounds a bit racist and that is not apprecaited on this forum :grr:
The "navy" and the Artillery" are two Names folks stuck on them from europe, and although mostly correct, the artillery was used by more than just the artillery corp. So, naming of lugers might be incorrect, but I don't think we chastise those who do... Historically, which is what byf was asking; the rumour was that the "black widow" was for SS officers, and as their uniform was all black, fit into their uniform better. All hogwash; so although the name might sound cool; it is an incorrect and thus mistake to perpetuate the myth of somehting incorrect (I will use the phrase at times, so folks will know what I am talking about). Same reason folks call all undated Simsons "model 1923", no such 'model' designation. Or write it as simpson, ignorance, they simply don't know any better. Ed |
I think that we in the luger collecting world should attempt to eliminate the term Black Widow. At least we should try and avoid using it. Bill

names....
Is it so WRONG to refer to a 71/2" Colt SAA as a "Hogleg"??
:roflmao: just to add to the controversy.. http://forum.lugerforum.com/lfupload/arachnid_p.08_.jpg  In fact, you shouldn't endorse the name of this forum "Lugerforum", because in REALITY it is the "P.08forum" see how messy it could get??? :D |
Dogleg?

The "ALL DARK COLOR LUGER"
:D l m a o....tac, now that's funny.!
This is why i wish to own a Simson Luger so much. The historical ties to our culture, and this manufacturer. |
DWM lugers until 1930 are not too bad in that case, Tac:
DWM and Mauser were in the hands of Ludwig Loewe & Cie until around 1929. And the Loewe family was, like Simson, of Jewish origin. |
hmm, hit the reply button twice...

Ed,
Hi and thanks for the message...I didn't even realize where to access messages before, but again, you have now brought me up to speed. Thanks for the tip. |
Nicknames for certain firearms, like 'em or not are here to stay. Another controversial nickname is the "Schmeisser" moniker given to the MP40 during WWII. That one makes the purists go ballistic and will get you flamed if you use it on some forums.
I don't have a problem with the Schmeisser nickname because it was coined during the war and although technically incorrect, it is part of the weapon's history. I agree with Tac on the Black Widow moniker. Probably a marketing ploy. |
