Japanese Luger?
Someone asked the following question of me, and I didn't know the answer: "Are there any known Lugers with Japanese markings added?" It seems to me I once did see a photo of such a Luger, but it was many years ago. Any info anyone can impart?

Re: Japanese Luger?
I once owned a commerical luger with 2 oriental characters the translated to Formosa Police. I'm not sure if they were Chinese or Japanese. Tom

Re: Japanese Luger?
The Japanese were required to buy their own pistols and many bought Nambu's. However I would imagine that a few Lugers would turn up with unit markings or self stamped with Japanese charecters, but this is unknown to me.

Isn't there a photo in one of Still's books of a P.08 with a Japanese Mum on the reciever ring.

Formosa Police...
would have been Chinese, as Formosa was the former name for Taiwan. Also look in the Technical Information section, Markings, Logo 1 for the Vickers with the Japanese marking.

Re: Formosa Police...
I saw a Luger with a fair number of Japanese markings a somewhat local Luger guy had at a show just a couple of years ago. What I can't remember is whether the mum was on the receiver or not; may have been.
This collector told me the gun had been checked in all sorts of ways and he was convinced of its genuin-ness. He had it for sale for $13,000. He did sell it but I don't know how much for. |
