New ;) Police magazine

Bought this magazine at the same time that I got the artillery luger I bought today, it was what convinced me to get it.

Haenel Schmeisser spine marked, with a flat follower button and Starburst K on the spine.

Ed, Weird flat button you have there!

Haenel Schmeisser spine marked, with a flat follower and Starburst K on the spine. You show everything but this! You must be tired...Jerry

As soon as I posted this the photo shows up! Man your quick!

Very nice! Wish I had one like it...

The starburst K is unusual, as is the flat follower button. I will have to ask Don Hallock, he told me, but he said it fast and I'd been drinking... :(

Was he buying the drinks?

Edward Tinker 09-23-2007 12:51 AM

well somebody got stuck with the bill  and somehow bypassed me (i was already in the room, since I did NOT have dinner). I think it was Don that got stuck with Dinner, but thats another story and I was already in the room asleep.

PS: I am trying to figure out the flat follower button, versus the spine marking, versus when the startbursts switched. When thety came into existence, when they left, etc.
Do you know this stuff Howard, and yes, I think a phone call would be easier (not tonight its 12:54 AM, and I oughter get to sleep :)

I can add that info to the upgraded list DG has asked me to do, shouldn't take me 6 months or so......

Flat button mag

Hi Ed and all! That flat button type, was unique to that shell (not like early 1900's!) ...anything else is most likely a replacement ...That is because, the mag shell extrusion, (really cold drawn formed tubing) was their first attempt at the new, soon to become "fxo" "code 122" type mags in their final form... The mag as Ed has pictured had the flat button because it just didn't have enough clearance to clear the bulky tube, (it was relieved on the back side to clear the shell) and had too much height to clear the grips when produced as in the same fashion as earlier sheetmetal mags (hence flattened top or face) ,. I believe the attaching stud on this type of follower button is square where it goes into the follower to keep it from rotating when loose... These guy would not be denied ... When they went new on something..it was all the way! Best to all, til...lat'r...GT BTW ED, great mag in that condition... Rare. Rare, Rare....

thank you GT, I have been picking them up as I find them. Pciked one up this week in bad condition. Surprised me, first one I have seen with the cadium or whatever coming off, I was starting to believe they were a stainless mixture (they are all magnetic).

I do have 2 others with the same type of body and "normal" follower button, but I will have to look close at them.

Ed, As GT said, these spine marked HS mags should have the flat follow button. Now I know what type button should go into the followers that I have with the square hole. If anyone has a flat fully checkered follower button with a threaded post, this is for the earliest M1900 mags. Please trade it to me. TH

Ed, The cadium plating (oxidized to a yellow tint) was on the early DWM & Erfurt mags until about 1916, until they switch to tin plating (which is what one normally sees peeling) until Mauser switched to nickel in the 1930s.

These particular types, I get the feeling they are coated with something else, but as i say, just a feeling....
