storage question
 

I have to put my lugers in storage for about 3 months. I will be putting them along with other guns in a steel storage building for about 3 months.
I was told if I had to do this than it would be best to wipe them down with RIGS grease.
Has any one used this product before?

Hi:

I think that Rig grease is a bit of an overkill.

Rig grease will dry out over time and cause moisture to form around it. I had a nice M98/09 Mauser that had its bright metal discolored by Rig grease for this very reason.

Get a small bottle of Break Free (CLP) and liberally apply it. This is what the military has been using for years with great success.

You may also consider using impregnated paper such as that sometimes used to wrap new handguns in as they leave the factory. This used to be available from SKS Industries: 1-800-365-1117. If they don't have it, I know you can get it from Brownell's Incorporated, in Montezuma, Iowa: www.brownells.org

The paper is "VCI Impregnated-Non Toxic Corrosion Inhibiting Paper for Protection of Ferrous Metals"

Not certain, but the brand name might be "ANOX-35M"

The package I got had 25 sheets in it, and each sheet was 12 inches long on each side.

I think it is helpful for storage.

Put them in zip-lock bags after whatever you choose to use. Take the grips off first, and put them in seperate bags.
I saw an Artillary Luger after it was brought back from New Orleans right after Katrina. Not pretty. The guy had left it in his house when he evacuated for the storm. I thought to myself, what a 10 cent bag could have done.

Another thing you may consider is there is a type of plastic bag that is made especially for handgun storage. It can also be heat sealed and comes in a 12-pack from Brownells, Inc. Their web site is www.brownells.com (I was wrong above when I said it was .org) The stock number on a 12-pack for handgun sized bags is 083-054-012. And it comes with an information sheet that has lots of extra tips on protective long term storage. I made a digital picture of these instructions and will Email it to you if you wish.
