I am a little po'ed with this guy. He puts it up with no reserve, and gets bids then adds the disclaimer about selling it in house and cancels the auction. I guess he had some offers and did not want to pay the GB fees.

I had thought that unless you added a disclaimer statement in the original listing, stating that the auction could be ended early if you sold the pistol locally, that GB rules were that you were bound to continue the auction once the bidding started. So much for what I know. It looked to be a pretty fair byf and I had planned to bid on it too.

The problem with this whole online auction paradigm is that the rules are essentially impossible to enforce. If someone misbehaves, then they get "terminated", but so what? They just come back with a new screen name. In the end, it's mail order in the blind - you really don't know who you're dealing with, and there's not much you can do if things don't go well. It's is frankly amazing to me that the whole thing works at all, much less as well as it does. People really seem to want this to work.

That said, I think that these auction organizations will continue to face more pressure as fraud increases, which it seems to be doing. The folks here make amusing observations about obviously false Luger ads, but these ads may in fact be crimes if the owner makes false statements knowingly. Federal crimes at that. The comments on these sales sometimes call out the problems, making it all the more difficult for the seller to disclaim knowledge of the falsity of his statements. The problem for eBay and other auctioneers is that this puts them on notice too, and makes them an accomplice if they continue to post the listing. It will be interested to see what happens...

I've bought several guns on auctions recently and have done well, but I realize there is always a risk and that would be frustrating to have an auction ended early. My biggest gripe is sellers on Guns America. Several times I have asked about listings only to find out the item had already been sold or was on hold. Apparently, some of the sellers fail to remove the listing after they have accepted an offer.

According to what I saw on the linked item provided, the Luger sold for $655. If an item has a winning bid and you end it early, it's sold as far as GB is concerned. This means he had to pay the listing and final value fees. He must have had a pretty good price on it at the store. I detest this practice of pulling guns off an auction after they have winning bids. Plus, it's stupid, because you never know how high something will go in the last minutes. If you're worried about not getting enough for it, set a reserve or start it at your minimum. What's so hard about that? These guys are idiots, so you're better off not winning the gun. There would probably be more idiocy trying to pay him and get it mailed.

Not the same thing, but an interesting GB experience, anyway....I once ended a GB no reserve auction with bids on it near the end when a potential bidder informed me that one of my photos was of a different pistol. I emailed the high bidder of my intent (& why), and contacted GB. As people on this thread have commented, it did count as a completed auction. Soon after relisting (with the correct photos) I received a positive feedback (for being honest) from the first "winning " bidder (who did not bid again), a credit from GB and a much higher price the second time around.

My experience on GB is to treat people the way they want to be treated & it will pay off.

He can not write in after there are 6 bids and tell you he has the right to do anything. I tried to find how to contact Gun Broker but no real luck yet. He needs to be reported for doing that especially since he did not have a reserve on it. Rick B
