Russian "dipper"

This Luger is not new to this Forum. I still have the mechanical problems.

I want to remove whatever the Russians put on this Luger. Some small parts will not be subjected to this procedure because they have a nice bright Peacock blue color.

For this effort I have the following:

A good electric stove top and a good electric oven,
Pyrex dishes of various shapes, depths, and sizes,
Appropriate gloves,
I have ample Acetone and lacquer thinner.
I have several other household items, but perhaps not the ones I need need for this work.
My local stores are open 24/7 so I can get what I might need for this effort.

Hello Hoyt,

I believe regular vinegar could remove it.. If you take it apart and lay in in vinegar for about 24 hours, most of it should then go off.
Be aware that it will most likely rust a little in small places, inside barrel, between parts and in scratches. So don't let it stay in it too long.

Placing the Luger in an oven may cause weakness in the metal, especially the upper parts.. I would not recommend you to do that, it could be dangerous!

All the best,

Hoyt,

Before you go too far. Try 00000 steel wool and a good gun oil. Lightly rub with oil and steel wool periodically wiping it with paper towels. If you notice that it's coming off on the paper towel? Then it's working. Time , patience and elbow grease.

Another method is to try stainless steel wool. It looks like a course scowering pad, but it doesn't harm the original finish.

To Steinar and Ron:

Steinar, I have no problem of using vinegar. Yes, vinegar will probably rust the parts since it is after all an acid. I just want that junk gone forever.

Ron, your suggestion of using 00000 steel wool or stainless steel wool and a good gun oil is also good. It seems that would be labor-intensive. The down side to that approach is that I probably would not be able to get into the tiny nooks and corners.

Regards,
Hoyt

I THINK I have decided to go with the vinegar. I will report results later.

Hoyt,

Wrap 00000 steel wool around Q-Tips for the nooks and corners.

I wonder if Big 45 Metal Cleaner would work on this stuff?
