Sear bar? Cant get it out....
 

Hi there,
I just got my first luger, and im having problems striping her to get her all nice and clean. The problem is my sear bar has that wierd looking thing on top of it holding it in, i pull up on the front of that thing where it pins the sear bar, thinking it should come out but it doesnt. Any advice. I dont want to scratch, mar, or break anything so im not getting crazy with it.
Any help would be great.

Without pictures, it sounds like you are talking about the sear bar spring. It needs to be removed to take out the sear bar. Lift up on the front of the spring by inserting a small screwdriver under the curved forward end. Push the spring forward and it will slide out of the frame. The sear bar can then be lifted out of the frame.
To re-assemble, put the sear bar back in the frame, place the spring on top of the bar and press down and back to slide the spring back into the groove in the frame.

Got it thanks. It wasnt the spring, i got that part, its this other thing thats a spring loaded pin that comes in from the top.
I just wasnt pulling it up quite far enough to get the pin out.

Sear safety?

Must be. My ffl knows alot about lugers and says hes only seen some with it, its not a common thing i guess. But its factory to the rework he says, thats where most of them got that thing.
I wasnt pushing it up far enough because i didnt want to break it or bend it.

Yep thats it. I found the "data base" here and found out that only the police lugers got them, unless it was added later. But mine is origional to the rework.
I did get it out and everything ok, just wasnt sure why some dont have it. And why do some have the sear bar back farther than mine, because mine there is like an 1/8 inch gap between the safety block and the sear bar, where on some they mate up right next to eachother.??

You have what is known as a "relieved" sear bar. In 1916 an improvement to the sear bar was made that permitted a loaded gun to be cleared with the safety on. Before the sear bar was relieved, with the safety on you couldn't bring the toggle back far enough to extract the cartridge from the chamber. Many earlier guns that were still in service were retrofitted with the relieved sear bar.

I have never and would never remove a police sear safety as a take-down to clean a luger :eek:


I think a lot of people clean "too much", but I am more afraid of damage than worried it "might not" be clean enough.... perhaps I worry needlessly :rolleyes:

He didn't remove the sear safety, just had a little difficulty in getting it disengaged from the sear bar so that he could remove the sear bar.
