How to repair?
 

A friend of mine is wondering how to repair this broken piece?

Looks like a Ertal repro case (good quality repro) with an original cleaning rod. Repair of the rod is a job for a machinist. The broken shank must be drilled out of the top piece. To keep the rod its original length it should be reassembled with a dowel. The rod portion would need to be carefully drilled with the same diameter drill that was used to remove the shank from the top piece. Then a brass dowel of that diameter can be used to rejoin the two parts. Solder or "JB Weld" would make it a permanent joint. I am sure there are also other methods.

P.S. I believe Simpson's has a case like this currently for sale at $1795!

Ken Coyle out of Oregon makes a very nice case as well...even with aged metal corner reinforcements. Got to see his craftsmanship at Reno several times in the past.

Am I reading the Simpson site right $1495.00 for my display case, I paid Ralph only $400.00 and I thought that was steep, Has anyone ever seen an original for sale and how much, more than the gun it holds!

Ron, I suspect this rod is not original but one of the repro's that have a screw on shaft. The screw on shaft type are very fragile as the screw section is less than half the fiameter of the main shaft. I would bet dollars to doughnuts a football linebacker could not twist off a full diameter brass cleaning rod shaft.

Dont jump to conclusion, Debbie can swear Ive broken, fallen and embarrased Her in some of the strangest places. BEAT THIS,IFELL AND BROKE MY ANKLE, IN MY ORTHOPEDIC SURGEONS' OFFICE, Right in front of the waiting room, Debbie and my Doc almost pissed themselves,Since then I have had to find another doctor, they didnt say why, I wonder???????

Eric, I did indeed recieve your excellent photo's and the screw in section is clearly in evidence. I could be wrong of course but I do not believe an original type rod was ever made with this screw on shaft feature. It is inherantly weak and prone to breakage. A very bad idea an completely unnecessary.
At any rate..I would not go to any great lengths to repair this one but instead, put my money towards aquiring an original.

My Dunken Donut tale, Before my stroke/coma, we were headed towards the Orlano Gunshow, We stopped as usual to Dunken Donuts, Well I bit the wrong end of a jelly donut, squirting red jell all over my chest. Well when I arrived, they were ready to call the paramedics, Everybody thought I had just been shot, The rest was history. Its ashame Dunken Donuts, doesn't give out bibs!!!!!!!
