New P08 Help Please

Can anyone help identify this P08 belonging to my friend? He believes this is a commercial variant used by police. Any input at all would be appreciated, thanks very much Gentlemen:bigbye:

It is a 1913 dated P08 (military). Weimar property marking was added 1920 or later.

At some point, probably during the twenties, the pistol was put into police use as is evidenced by the grip strap marking. As the police marking has been X'd out and there is no police safety, it may have subsequently left police service and gone back to the military.

Joseph,

I'll let others comment on the gun itself but I agree with George that it probably left police service. In fact, it may have been in police service only a few years in the Sicherheitspolizei, the forerunner of the Schutzpolizei that was disbanded in October 1920 (officially!). The reason I say this is that the canceled marking which appears to be S.Mo.II. 48. does not conform to any known Schupo marking.

Thanks for posting this. I'll have to ponder what it might mean.

Don, the third letter is "e" so should it be Merseburg?

Aha! Someone with better eyesight. You're quite right Jan. Thanks --- I would have been puzzling over this for a long time.

No Don, your eyes are pretty good... This was only personall inspection as this Luger is sitting on my desk. Having problems with posting pics I asked my best friend for it....
