Change the main spring?
 

I really liked the looks of CHRISW's pieced together Luger in the "All P-08 Military Lugers" portion of the forum. I have a nice shooter with a new 4" barrel, but would consider putting in a 6" in lieu of buying another pistol.

Because of the increased mass of the barrel (going from 4" to 6"), does any modification need to be made to the main spring?

I don't know this from fact, but my experience has shown me that you don't need to. I have a six on a frame that has had both a four and an arty top on it at one time or another, and they all shot fine. Its my ultimate po'boys shooter. I have all three tops and one frame, and I take whatever upper I feel like shooting that day.

In my experience a stronger main spring is not necessary. I recommend the 6" barrel for a shooter. For me, the longer sight radius makes a big difference and in my opinion the longer barrel just looks better in terms of proportions. I would also recommend installing a taller front sight (fashioned from a sight blank) so that you can shoot at "point of aim" at reasonable shooting distances, like 50 feet instead of 50 meters. FYI, I recall an add from Sarco in a recent Shotgun News for 6" barrels with a navy type raised sight base. KFS

I agree with these guys, a 6 inch is a nice shooter.

You mean that if I were to have a 6" barrel with a standard sight installed, the gun would shoot "high" unless I had a taller front sight put in? I would have thought the platform for the sight would have been raised slightly to compensate for the taper of the barrel.

Or on the other hand, the taper should be more gradual with a 6" rather than with a 4" barrel but the site platform on either barrel would be at the same height relative to the rear sight...

A deep problem for a shallow mind (which I have).

Dave, Sarco's high front sight base 6" barrel are designed to be used with their 2 position "Navy type" rear sight. I have both in stock at Sarco's prices. I also have their standard low base barrels in stock @$100 + $100 for installation. hellerarms@webtv.net

Dave, the 6" hits higher and needs a taller front sight because the round is in the barrel longer, pushing the gun back and the muzzle up in your hand, the gun pivoting into your web, making the muzzle rise. A bullet will do the same for a 4" but it takes less time in the barrel. Until the gasses are no longer pushing the gun - and its inertia keeps it going. The longer time the bullet is in the barrel the more recoil force. My 6" conversion also needed a taller sight, taller than any stock P08 Luger sight, to hit POI at the POA.

Lugerdoc's offer is a really great deal, 200 installed, takes a shooter from having a worn-out bore into a 'Navy'-length shooter that looks new to a chambered bullet.
