Importing a Luger
 

Can anyone with recent experience of importing to the USA from Europe please advise me - or should I just e-mail Simpsons.

Circumstances vary with the type piece you are desiring to import. The critical issue is the piece a former military weapon. If it is, you should get someone like Bob Simpson involved from the get-go. If it is a purely commercial C&R piece you can do it yourself.

How does that work to import with a C&R? I have seen quite a few lugers for sale in Germany, and the prices seem pretty good, even with the bad exchange rate. Is it easier to import single guns or would it be better to do multiples?

the P '08 in question is a DWM 1915.. a former military weapon.
as I said (tac pls note) re: importing to the USA from Europe.....
I'm not a Section 5 UK RFD (US = FFL with bells & whistles)
I am merely co-ordinating this transaction on behalf of an old pal of mine who now lives in the USA....

and all due to tha availability of 45-70 ammo....Also have had a Ruger No 1 and a Marlin in 45-70.
My current 45-70 - a Sharps replica - nitro-proofed is quite a beast but with my eyesight needs a scope!

There is a Importer FFL you can get. I don't know how easy it is to obtain.

Unless that 1915 DWM has something very special about it, there is probably no justification for the time, frustration, and money that would be involved in getting it here.

An ordinary 1915 DWM in 90% condition is a very common pistol in the US and would typically bring less than $1000 retail. If you have to get it out of England for whatever purpose, I would recomment taking it apart, stripping the frame and sending everything except the frame to the US. Then sell the frame in Europe.

The folks who make a living importing such weapons into the US are either bringing in exceptional pieces or buy hundreds of them at a time for twenty-five cents on the dollar and then bring them all in together under one set of import papers. Even at that, the process is grueling and sometimes individual pieces are rejected.

This isn't any ordinary 1915 P '08...
99.5% and with holster previously owned by the famous Wills tabacco magate family - who at one time owned half of the City of Bristol (UK that is) I also own D M Wills's Webley Fosbery 455 which saw WW1 action and presumably when he got the P '08 .......
but I've decided to keep it an sell the 1917 P '08 I hold on s7.3.
F.A.O. tacfoley - The 1917 will go in the next Holts auction. .. unless I get an offer before the sale.

Thanks for the info re: C & R v former military weapons...
could someone be so kind as to provide the link to the C & R List?
As most of my stuff is/are former military weapons I will contact Bob Simpson but as Lugers are so common in the USA I may sell them here.

BTW - I have more of less decided to "emigrate" from the UK when I retire for a number of reasons: - 1. too many Muslims here in the UK 2. the gun laws 3. my UK Gov't pension should stretch further abroad than here.

With the current exchange rate, you would do quite well here in the US. Last time I checked it was $2 US to the Pound. Also, depending on where you moved to, there are lots of English ex-pats here.... cheers

There is a small matter of guns imported into the U.S. having to undergo a permanent stamping by the importer which includes his name and location. Many consider this marking a defacement and it can seriously reduce the value.
