Safe & Loaded American Eagle Mr. Still suggest
I had the distinct pleasure of speaking to Mr. Jan Still last night about purchasing one of his books. While I was speaking to him, I took advantage of the monent and asked his opinion about my Safe and Loaded American Eagle. To my surprise, he suggested I present it to the Luger forum for evaluation where he along with others might share opinions. I realize he has his own forum, but I informed him I was much more comfortalbe here and he found no problem with that. So here are a few pictures of this wonderful old Luger. It appears to be new and unfired. Along with the help of Dwight, it appears there are about four of these Safe and Loaded with the American Eagle Crest. If anyone else has one or knows the whereabouts of one, please come forward with the serial number for Dwight's database. Thanks,
Mike http://forum.lugerforum.com/lfupload/safe_loaded.jpg http://forum.lugerforum.com/lfupload/safe_loaded2.jpg http://forum.lugerforum.com/lfupload/safe_loaded3.jpg http://forum.lugerforum.com/lfupload/safe_loaded4.jpg http://forum.lugerforum.com/lfupload/safe_loaded5.jpg http://forum.lugerforum.com/lfupload/safe_loaded6.jpg http://forum.lugerforum.com/lfupload/safe_loaded7.jpg http://forum.lugerforum.com/lfupload/safe_loaded8.jpg http://forum.lugerforum.com/lfupload/safe_loaded9.jpg http://forum.lugerforum.com/lfupload/safe_loaded10.jpg http://forum.lugerforum.com/lfupload/safe_loaded11.jpg http://forum.lugerforum.com/lfupload/safe_loaded12.jpg |
Nice Mike.
Jan is one of the nicest guys to deal with / talk to, has helped me tremendously in the past. ed |
Hi Mike,
The other 3 Safe & Loaded AE's have 5 digit S#'s, this one is an Alphabet Commercial; 4 digit S# w/ suffix, which so far according to Dwight's database is 1 of a kind. And to be in new & unfired condition, a real treasure. Mike C. |
Mike,
Thats an incredibly sweet Luger. I had my eye on it for a long, long time, I'm glad that it has gone to a good home. --Dwight |
Anyone remember the details of a Safe & Loaded Luger an older (and a bit grumpy) guy named Frank Cannon usually had for sale at Reno for $ 4K asking ???
|
Mike,
That Luger is a GEM! I think its fantastic. |
Pete,
I actually found Frank's gun in my notes, it was a Stoeger and he wanted $4.5k. He's local to me, but I haven't seen him at a gun show in two or three years now. --Dwight |
Thanks, Dwight...could not remember the details other than the Safe/Loaded markings.

Mike, you certainly have a nice Luger there. I am but a pedestrian when it comes to the many variations in 1920's imported Lugers but I do have a few at hand presently and have noted some of my observations below:
I have a .30 calibre 1920 (alphabet) serial number 6463k, neither an Eagle nor "SAFE, LOADED" marked. It is in about 98% condition. The overall finish of the steel under the bluing appears a bit smoother than yours. THe wear on the side of the extractor is almost nonexistant but very even. Like yours, the"GERMANY" is pretty light. The barrel serial number exhibits a halo. The hold-open is not numbered. Also in the sack is a 1923 type .30 calibre that is "SAFE,LOADED" marked, its serial number is 91531. This is professionally restore gun so any comparisons of finish carry little weight. The "SAFE" marking seems to be deeper than yours. The hold-open is not numbered. Last is a Stoeger artillery 9 mm serial number 513t. This pistol is believed by those who have examined it to be in original 98% condition. It is "SAFE,LOADED" marked with the eagle. The eagle appears to differ from yours in some very minor ways which can be explained by the wear on equipment. The barrel number on this gun may have a halo but maybe not. The hold-open is not numbered. |
George,
Glad to hear about the interesting pistols. The Safe/Loaded artillery is new to the database, could you tell me, Stoeger howmany lines? .30 or 9mm? Any more Commercials in hand that I might like to know about? --Dwight |
Dwight,
If I recall, George bought it from David Jackson. There might still be photos in David's old sales ad on the LF or over at Jan's Gun Boards... |
Extensive photos of both my artillery eagles can be found on Jan Still's forum under the 1918-1933 DWM, Simson, etc area. They are two different entries.
