Code 42 question.
 

Hello guys,

I have a 1916 Erfurt Imperial Luger with the last two digits "76" all over except the sear and the side plate. Both sear and side plate or trigger plate as some might call it have a "42". The side plate is imperial marked and has a 42 instead of 76 on it. What I am gettin at is this....could the 42 on side plate and sear have been a WWII mauser replacement as I have heard the "42" is a mauser code. Any thoughts on this or am I dead wrong im my suspisions.

The last 2 digits of the serial number on Lugers were stamped on the side plate, toggle , and most of the main parts of the gun. The "42" is a Mauser code but only when on the middle of the toggle. My understaning is a "42" mauser still will have a partial serial number (the last 2 digits of the actual serial number). The 42 stamped sideplate could be from any luger with the last 2 digits of it's serial number being "42". For example 7842, 9142 and so on. The picture link below is a picture of the top of my luger. The byf is also a Mauser code, and notice there is a partial serial number. So imagine a 42 in place of the byf.

If I understand your question correctly the answer would be no. The 42 on the sideplate does not mean it is a Mauser replacmeant part.

Mauser replacement parts are stamped S42, not just the number 42. Your sideplate with an imperial stamp obviously has been taken from a WW1 Erfurt Luger which had a serial number ending in 42.

Thanks for the info, I guess the 42 stamped side plate is just a random number 42 from another pistol, Thanks....this answers my question.
