Best basic book on Lugers?

What would you recommend as the best basic book(s) on Lugers, for a new collector / shooter?

-Everything Jan Still wrote, writes and will write.
-The Luger Story by John Walter and his 1977 'Luger'.
-If your German is good: "Die Pistole 08" by Goertz.
-Kenyon's Lugers at Random for the nice overview.
-A bit dated but interesting nonetheless: Fred Datig's 'The Luger Pistol'.

And there are a number of books that cater for Luger variations, like 'The Dutch Luger', Mauro's LP08 book, Bobba's book on Swiss lugers, etc..

Lugers at Random helped me the most starting out ,now I use Stills books the most.

German Small Arms Marking by Gortz & Bryans is a good one too after you purchase Lugers at Random. It will put into perspective much of what is discussed here on the forum but this is only step two from there Stills books and then to the specialty books.

Start with Lugers at Random but look at it as an appetizer to a great meal.

Most books can be found on eBay, and at the various book outlets but do yourself a favor and do a little research before you buy, there is a wide range of prices for the same book, oh look here too for books to buy place a WTB ad, you just never know what the other collectors have to sale and they are usually priced reasonably or at least not overpriced.

Some of Stills books are available directly from him, some money to be saved by buying direct.

Jim, I must agree with the above opinions, "Lugers at Random" is the place to start (I have them available new @$60 postpaid) until you are ready for the more detailed Still series. TH hellerarms@webtv.net
