info on byf 41 pics included
 

Hi could you give me any info on this byf 41? I am thinking about purchasing it. By the way I am new to the forum and hope to speak more with you once I get a luger.

Hi Travis, welcome to the Luger Forum!

It looks like a nice Luger, however, I think I detect a large "X" on the left side behind the number on the receiver. If my eyes aren't deceiving me, the pistol is a Russian Capture and probably dip blued. Then it wouldn't have the same price range as an original finish Luger.

The external and internal marked parts all should be marked "81", the same as the last two digits of the pistol.

Thanks Frank! Yeah it does have an "X" on it, I was hoping to get it as a shooter first and foremost so I'll use this info when trying to hammer out a price.

These capture pieces have been looked at as nothing more than shooters. They are now starting to rise in value as more collectors see this as another part of the Luger's long and sorted history. But Frank is right they will never be worth as much as a nice original finish. BTW. Looks like a nice one,good luck on getting it.

would this fall into the "Black widow" block of pistols for that year? With this being a russian capture it may not have it's original grips. Or could someone tell me about when this was made? Thank you if you can provide any information.

Hi Travis, 41 byf, S/N 7581w, was completed about August 1941.

IMO anything after about the 41 byf T-Block could have black Bakelite grips. I don't think there is a definate block or blocks that were shipped with these grips. They seem to be scattered throughout the late 1941 and 1942 byf coded Lugers.

If the wooden grips are numbered to the pistol, they might be original, but who knows!!

BTW, there is no official Luger named "Black Widow". That is an American Dealer's name for lesser desirable Lugers so he would be able to sell Lugers with black grips easier. It worked!! They now demand a higher price than wooden grip Lugers, all else being equal. I still like the wooden grips better!!

That is still a nice looking Luger even though it's a RC. I agree with the thinking that it is a part of the guns' history. It's a Luger from WW11 and they don't make them anymore! I have a BYF41 #7577w that is all matching with original finish. The grips are the wood type with matching numbers. It's kind of neat to see one probably made the same day as mine! Hope you were able to make a deal on it.

That's very cool to see the cousin to this gun. I did end up getting it. Probably for a little more than it was worth but it's a great shooter and have not had any problems with it after 300 rounds. I got just what i was looking for so i don't mind spending a little extra, plus the gun looks great. The pics don't do it justice.
