I think this stuff is "trench art."I have some similar items my grandfather brought home.
He said they were made by him and other guys from buttons or buckles. I have a belt and buckle he wore to hold his trap shooting pouch. He "de-kaiserfied" it by denting in the crown. His lighter, similar to yours, was made from a turnbuckle used on tension wires on planes. It has a german button on one side and his initials on the other. Grampaw was a REMF and got his stuff trading with POWs. He said these items were quite common. I have seen several matchbox covers. I used to have one with a hammer and sickle badge and hand stamped "Russland Kursk" 27 Pz with the Waloon cross. It got ripped off years ago-anybody got it? |
I have seen a lot of trench art. I do not believe these are those. The crown and lettering is to perfect and consistant between pieces. Most of the trench art I have seen was made out of shell casings and was fairly crude. Regardless they are a part of history. Bill
