BYF Grips
 

Are there serial numbers on byf grips. i know there are none on the black plastic grips but what about the wooden ones. Does it make a difference whether it is 1941 or 1942. thanks

Yes, the grips are serialized. I have a 41 and 42, and both have the last two digits of the serial number on the inside of the grips.

thanks. from reading the referred to answers it appears that byf 1942 wood grips should be stamped. however i am not clear as to what 1941 wood grips should have or not have. further refernce to a suffix is made. does that refer to the scripted letter under the serial number on the front of the frame below the barrel and receiver. lastly reference is made to b-block and n-block. what does that refer to. thanks

Hi Lucky, welcome!! Yes, the wooden grips for both 41 and 42 byf Lugers should have the last two digits of the serial numbered stamped on the inside surface of the grips (just as Tracy said)!!!

The term "block" refers to the suffix letted stamped on the front of the frame. Each letter represents about 10,000 pistols or blocks of pistols (actually, numbers from 1 to 9,999). So a n-block refers to pistol serial numbers in the range from 1n to 9999n.

So to sum up; all byfs are serialed (wood grips)? They didn't stop at some point in 1942?

Are there supposed to be WaA marks in the grips also? My impression is no?

Mikkel, all byf wooden grips should be serialized to the pistol.

Some "official" replacement grips were made with E/655 and some with E/135 Waffenamt Marks, but rarely, if any, were both Waffenamt and serial marked!!

what about 1940 1939/42 grips, are they supposed to be numbered?

Dante, the 1939 Code 42 grips are not numbered in almost every case I have seen. The 1940 Code 42 grips are numbered in almost every case I have seen.

Thanks Frank, I have a 1939 and the grips are unnumbered, I was really worried because it is minty with two matching mags, mint original grips, paid $3000 came with minty holster and tool. Thats the most Ive ever paid for a luger I think. The condition of the rig and the two mags just made me do it. Im going to check my 1940 and see if the grips are numbered on that one, cant remember if they are numbered or proofed.

I have a pair of grips that are stamped with the last two numbers and the E/135.
I tried to get a better pic but my "user friendly" camera SUCKS!
Anyway here are the pics.

Bob, thanks for the pics!! Just is proof that both serial numbers and Waffenamt Marks do exist!! BTW, nasty chip on the left grip! Too bad! :(

Ya, I do have the piece that broke off. I just need some time to carefully glue it back on.
