relining artillery luger to 7.65mm luger ?
Im considering a very worn finish artillery luger with very poor bore in 9mm
and want to keep the original exterior as part of a restoration idea would it be reasonable and safe to have it relined to 30 cal ? would the rechamber to 30 cal even be possible ? anybody know of good shop in US to have this or similiar work done / cost ? does a worn out barrel mean many rounds / lots of heat thru the barrel ? how much effect on value would poor bore have on a rust reblue restore that attempts to keep most markings albeit they be softer ? thanks for any comments / better ideas Bill |
Bill,
You might try Redmans's Rifling & Rebore. I learned about them from an old entry in the forum. Here's their link: http://www.redmansrifling.com/index.htm I contacted them about a month ago about reboring a Luger with a bore that looked like a sewer..... I didn't ask them about a new barrel liner.... Give them a try, the worst you can get is a "no." Good Luck and let us know how it works out! Dave in TN. |
Have you tried shooting your arty? A poor bore does not necessarily mean it won't be accurate. I have shot Lugers with a bore that looked like a sewer pipe. They worked fine and put the rounds where I pointed them.

I'll second that.
I bought an old 6.5X55 with the bore looked like 10 mile of bad road. I got it for a song with thoughts of a new custom barrel. A good friend told me to clean it and try it out before I did anything . It scrubbed it for a week and shot one of my best groups ever. I still kick myself for letting him talk me out of it. |
I guess I should have qualified my suggestion. Every gun I've every fired has had a shiny bore. I've never shot anything else.
I do get concerned when the texture of the bore looks like it will take the jacket off the bullet like a rasp. I've passed up several pistols because I couldn't get the price down low enough to justify installing a new barrel. They looked fine on the outside but really terrible when I've lit up the bore... I still have some more to learn.... Dave in TN |
Interesting topic. I have a 1918 DWM that has without doubt *the* worst looking bore that I have ever seen. So bad that you just want to turn your eyes away when you look up through there. However, I was shocked to discover that it is the most accurate of all my Lugers...hands down. The next worst bore in the group is a 1917 Erfurt and it is next most accurate. So I no longer turn down a shooter with a bad looking bore ...but I just can't get used to it in spite of how well they shoot.

update
recent inquiry to redmans - answer was he does not do luger , but does 30 cal relines on mauser c96 at about $100. does not do 9mm relines on c96
Ive decided to abandon this artillery restoration idea and focus on a custom target luger of some sort , likely using a mauser parabellum as a base gun thanks for all the comments Bill |
I can have your LPO8 barrel relined to 7.65 or 9mm for $200 if you decide to do it. TH
