42 1940 with matching mag
1 Attachment(s)
New here. :bigbye: Just acquired this Luger from my Dad. This thread: http://forum.lugerforum.com/showthre...threadid=15388 by Linda has several pictures. Mine looks pretty much identical in condition (maybe a bit nicer) and the proof marks are the same as hers. Mine is marked "42" on the toggle and "1940" over the chamber. Under the barrel it has a script "C". What other info would you need to identify this gun?

welcome to the forum!
Depends on what you are trying to find out? Serial number is needed to place an approximate date, and "it looks like another" is not always true... Proofs can be different etc.. Date is the 1940, the 42 is Mauser manufacturer.... Close ups would be needed to see if it has been reblued ... Appears to be a nice 1911 too.... Ed |
6617 is #. Proofs are identical to hers- same mark and same numbers (655) and same location. I'll try to get a decent photo- but my skill in getting close-ups is not very sophisticated.

Hi George, your 1940, code 42 Mauser Luger, S/N 6617c was completed about April 1940. All 1940 Military Mauser Lugers were marked with an eagle-over-655 on the right side of the receiver. These are intermediate and final inspection marks also known as Waffenamt (Weapon Office) Marks. To the right of these marks is the eagle-over-swastika or proof marks. Hope this helps!

I'll try to take some pictures. What would be most useful in determining shooter/collector status and approximate value?
|
Full left, full right, then some assorted close ups, of proofs on the right, top, a few others. Then we can see how sharp edges are, if proofs are smudged, if color looks right.

Deer camp is this weekend. Should I shoot the snot out of my latest acquisition?
|
I think I would leave the snot it this one till i could make sure it has not been refinished it looks good to me. clint

I agree with clint, if that is the original finish I would not shoot it a lot. I just paid big bucks for a 1939/40 in minty condition with two matching mags. I would never shoot it unless someone was trying to steal it from me.

As far as I know it is the original finish. My dad had it for at least 45 years and never did anything to it. The story I got was that he won it in a poker game in college. That was about 1955. He's had it ever since. The monetary value is not important to me. I would never sell this- but am curious what it could be worth. There is a big "but", however.

Try to find out if one of our members lives close to you and would look at it for a hands on evaluation. Pic's are good, books are good, but nothing beats hands on.

Hi...Value would run $1000-$1700 depending on who is buying....Dealer or private sale ...IMO

Also- is there anybody in Central Texas (like San Antonio) that would be willing to look at it? |
gray, it looks awfully nice to me... pop off a few caps and get it out of your system and see if it works, but I think I'd refrain from shooting a case of winchester through her...
If you want a shooter, i have a 6 inch I'd trade you ;) Ed |
Hello, I would check the bore before shooting. Clean any crap out that might be in there, dried grease, spiders etc.

Grayrock, I couldn't pull up the pictures you referred to of the 39 Luger Linda had. However I was fortunate to purchase from Linda that Luger. After getting it and taking it completely apart I find it hard to believe it had ever been fired, although I know it must have been. Mike Krause agreed it had never been reblued and was in excellent condition. It only had a very slight wear make on the left side of the muzzle from holster ware. It is so clean I don't feel I'll ever shoot any rounds through it. It also came with an original numbered mag.

Cleaned it up as best I could without any disassembly. Then loaded her up and used it as part of a 21 gun salute to my dad. A friend looked at it and said he thinks parts were reblued. I'll never part with it- besides, my dad engraved his name and ID number on it.

My sentiments exactly.
