Interesting piece.
I think it allows the shooter to clamp the stock between his arm and body whilst operating the gun. And you can whack the enemy over the head with the gun/stock/club contraption when you run out of bullets :D |

Looks perfect for shooting above a trench line whilst the shooter is BELOW same trench line. Interesting piece.
