Date my Luger :)

New to the forums and was hoping to pick some brains.

A friend recently asked me to see if I can drum up some info on a Luger his parents recently found in storage.

It is a DWM "American Eagle", Serial # 44,7XX. The only other marking on the gun is a Circled B under the serial on the barrel.

Looks like this Luger I found - DWM American Eagle Except the one I have is 9mm.

Can anyone share any info on this firearm?

Thanks,

Hsiawen

Hey, not fair! It is amazing how much info there is here if you look around. We'd still love to see pictures and more information :)

Hsiawen,

Welcome to the Forum, very glad you were able to make your way around and find the information you were looking for.

I am keeping a database on commercial Lugers, could you possibly let me know the full serial number for the record? Please email me dwightg@pacifier.com if you don't want to post the number publicly.

Thanks much.

I'll try and post up pictures and the send you the serial number this evening. I'm also swinging by the shop to get my gunsmith to take a look at it.

Sounds lke a Brazilan contract to me..

hman 11-30-2006 12:02 AM

Serial is 44717 and yeah that's what I've found about the Circle B but it is also stamped Germany.

Hsiawen,

Thanks for the sn and GERMANY note.

Your barrel is quite a conundrum. It is commonly thought that extra contract barrels were used to assemble commercial Lugers. There are other examples of Lugers with circle-B Brazilian barrels, as well as some 1900-model commercials with Swiss cross marked barrels.

Your gun is complicated by the fact that the Brazilian delivery was of guns in .30 cal., and yours is 9mm. Kenyon notes that some Brazilians are reported in 9mm and suggests that these may be later rebarrels or original barrels, but there is not independent verificaton of the latter.

Are there proof marks on this gun? Is there a serial number on the barrel?

Hsiawen,

Very nice pictures, thanks for the details (you got shots of the entire gun?).

Circle-B on a 9mm barrel may have something to reveal about Brazilian-contract Lugers. Quite a conundrum here, in that the c-B on your gun is haloed. Grounds for much thought.

Can you take a very close-up, sharp, detailed picture of the witness mark on this gun?

Which mark is the witness mark?

Also is there any reason as to why the Barrel has a 17 and a 4.7 stamp?

hman 12-06-2006 01:12 AM

I think this is what is meant by a witness mark. Included links to full res images.
