artillery lugers

Folks - Any ideas as to why there seem to be no mismatched artillery lugers for sale on the web? (Or any other mismatch lugers, for that matter.) It was pretty common 15 years ago to see any really fine lugers, but mismatched lugers were at not unusual at the gun shows. I am interested in mismatched lugers in good shape as I want to shoot them some, and it just doesn't seem right to do that to the all matching collector guns.

Thanks for your thoughts! Dave

Oops - typos seen. Sentence #3 should read "it was pretty uncommon" instead of "common", and "but mismatched lugers were not at all unusual"... Sorry for the poor grammar - must be stage fright! Dave

maybe all the mismatched are being forged? I don't know really.

I guess in the last 15 years the expertise has been improved and therefore the mismatched are goneâ?¦

Thanks; I was afraid that might be the answer. Dave

I would also guess that gun people found it more profitable to part the pieces out on Ebay then to sell mismatched Lugers. I've heard that from quite a few parts dealers.

Welcome to the forum. I do not really beleive that is the answer. There are lots of fakes out there, but lots and lots of mismatched and / or damaged / reblued lugers out there for sale for cheaper prices than fancy fakes. I have seen many guns for sale over the last year in that category and myself sold a mismatched artillery for around $850, my friend Dave sold another for around the same price. They are there, but you almost never see them in gun shops, pawn shops or even very many in gun shows.

This last weekend was the exception, a gentleman was selling his collection, and although not outstanding, he had numerous pieces from $950-$1500. Generally you find lugers by keeping your eyes open and talking on the forum. The on-line auctions have 20-30 lugers for sale at any one time, while the dealers have another 50-100 for sale, most nicer and more expensive, but you never know.

I have a mismatched LP08 Artillery, the top half ( barrel, sights, slide, toggle parts, ) is DWM 1917 all matched together, and in really nice unrefinished condition, while the bottom half is mostly matched to itself and carefully refinished hump-framed Mauser from about 1938-'39 era.
The bore is exceptionally clean like the rest of the upper, and the gun looks good and shoots fine. 'Photos available if interested. If no response here, will list on GB soon.
