barrel replacement

how do you know if a barrel has been replaced and renumbered

Edward Tinker 10-13-2006 07:02 PM

*color of blueing

*font of stamping

*no correct acceptance stamps on it

* it "feels"/ "looks" wrong

Be aware, it is not often that a barrel is replaced and is renumbered (that said, I have a 6 inch not 10 feet from me that has the "correct" numbering, but is a replacement, because I also have the 4 inch barrel for it...

renumbering

i have a p-08 which has a matching barrel and magazine. however the font for the number 3 on both the barrel and the magazine are different then the rest of the luger. the gun has all the marking of a first issue military but also has made in germany stamped on the barrel as well as germany on each side of the frame.

Mitch,

The number font alone is not a reliable indicator. It would be necessary to know what other markings are--or are not--on the barrel itself.

Hi. the only other markings that i can discern on the barrel is the "made in germany" stamp. there are 2 other marks which may be proof markings or dings. the barrel is in excellent condition as is the bore.

the magazine shares the same font type serial number, 4963. under that on the magazine is what appears as a scripted J, under that is a cross, and under that is a small imperial type eagal with ther last 2numbers of the serial number, but in very small print.

all of the markings on the luger aappear to be the same as those on the 1908 military issue depicted on page 161 of "Lugers At Random". a holdopen device was added with a proof mark present. the inside strap has 48R.M.G.13 inscribed. the frame has "germany" on both sides. all the parts have matching numbers. i hope this helps. thanks

Please give us more information, because I have been collecting for years, and I have no idea how I would tell from your statement...

Simple:
Old design from 1902 to around 1940 has a different shape than modern 9mm Para.
Chamber is not totally conical, you have a 5mm strait bore just after the beginning of riffling.

Mitch, How many NOS original "made in Germany" marked barrels would you like? Unfortunately, I only have 3 or 4 each of the 9x100mm & the 7.65x150mm ones left in stock. TH
