Corrosion

When I took my S/42

http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/dc8rayspimpgun.JPG

apart for the first time this weekend, I noticed some corrosion spots underneath the grips. Nothing real bad, but it's there. The spots are black and rough to the touch.

My "natural" 1917 also has some spots on the side plate and barrel(I haven't taken it apart yet, there maybe some more elsewhere).

I want to my kid to pass them along to his kids. What can I do to stop this and to keep it at bay.

As always, thanks for all your help, everyone(Dok, I love this forum).

Ray

Re: Corrosion

I am not a Luger expert but I have a lot of blackpowder experience which is extremely corrosive. First very gently remove the active rust. A rubber eraser is sometimes effective, very fine 0000 steel wool used slowly and gently so as not to damage surrounding areas. Next I clean the area with very light oil, like 3 in 1 or my personal favorite "mouse milk" an aviation product. Then wipe off all of the cleaner oil. Do it agian a couple of times. Follow up with a protective coating. WD40 is not a protective coating. I like RIG gun grease the best. Some others on the list may be able to comment on long term effects under the grips. I havee not seen a problem on some longrifle stocks with over 30 years of this treatment. But it is a lot more wood to dissapate the coating than Luger grips.

Re: Corrosion

I agree Heinz but when you use triple aught steel wool either soak the steel wool in oil or oil the piece liberally and you will not take off the blue. It will knock off the rust though. Jerry

Re: Corrosion

Jerry is absolutely right about the oil. I forgot that.
