G-Date: How did I do?

Hello, Gents. Wondering if I could get your opinion on this Luger. It is an f-block G-date and appears to be all matching. I didn't get a good picture of it, but the safety lever is numbered to match as well. Finish appears to be original and correct rust bluing. The internal surfaces are in the white and show no evidence of dip bluing. Straw is mostly gone on high-use areas of the trigger, but some other parts have a decent amount of straw left.

The crack visible on the inside of one of the grips does not extend thru to the exterior side of the grip. Bore is excellent, no pitting, great rifling. I am mostly a rifle collector and this is my first Luger, so please let me know - honestly - if this is a legit piece. I might've overpaid a little bit for it, but so long as it is legitimate, I don't mind. :)

The pistol has a lot of finger prints and such on it in the photos, but I took them before I took it apart and oiled it. Don't worry, she's well cared-for here. ;)

If it is "in the white" into receiver and frame, it seems to be in original condition.
I'm in the way to have a "G" date, too.

Chuck, it looks like a righteous G-Date to me. I'm a little surprised the grips are numbered. Most late G-Dates were shipped with unnumbered grips.

I would certainly add it to my little group of G-Dates!!

:)

Chuck,

I recommend that you drop a little super glue into the crack in the grip to prevent it from developing any further.

Gewehr 43 10-04-2006 01:42 PM

Thanks for your input, Gentlemen.

Frank, I too was surprised to see that the grips were numbered to the gun, as I'd read an earlier thread here stating that later g-dates didn't usually have them. I suppose the odds are pretty small that someone found matching-numbered grips and placed them on this gun. Also, I see no evidence of tampering like sanding off old numbers or whatnot. It also appears that the font on the grips matches the rest of the fonts pretty well, which leads me to believe it is also not faked.

Should there be any proofs or any other markings on the grips that might help determine if their originality? I'm just brainstorming and sort of thinking aloud on this one.

Navy, the interior surfaces of the receiver and frame are still in the white with no evidence of ever having been blued. Likewise, there is no evidence of bluing being removed on the interior surfaces either.

Hugh, I will take your recommendation, though I might use Gorilla glue. I've worked subtle miracles on one of my K43's with that stuff before. ;)

Again, I appreciate any and all input you folks have on this pistol. I'd like to learn as much about it as I can.

Stoopid newbie question: G-dates were produced in 1936, right? :o

Wrong!! Stooped: G-Dates were produced in 1935!!!!! :(

Gewehr 43 10-04-2006 02:56 PM

:p

I knew it was one or the other. What's a K-date then? '34?

lew1 10-04-2006 03:06 PM

K = 1934
G = 1935

Well, I'm happy to report that this Luger functioned perfectly at the range. I put two mags of winchester white box thru it just to say that I did and she didn't hiccup.

Now all I've gotta do is get some +p+ JHP's, nickle plate it, and find an IWB carry holster for it. :-P

On a more serious note, I'm curious what a piece like this should be worth. I'm wondering if what I paid is remotely in line or if I got fleeced.

lew1 10-12-2006 04:31 PM

Since I am all heart, I will give you $100 for it.

Remember the Straw is mostly gone on high-use areas of the trigger, it has a crack in one of the grips and fingerprints all over it. :)

HAD fingerprints all over it, thankyouverymuch. I have cleaned it since the photos. ;)

Thanks for the link, Tom. Given Simpsons' prices on their German long guns, I'm not sure how good of a real-life measuring stick they are. :( Sometimes I think their prices are pure fantasy.

The price Simpson is asking for one with a matching magazine seems high but Simpson always seems high.

I already have four "G" dates, none with a matching magazine though. I still need a couple, but those listed by Simpson do not fill the void.

A.Mifsin 10-15-2006 02:45 PM

Sure Simpson is high on prices, the last G dated Luger with matching mag, I bought last year was 1300 euros and I bought it from Kassel Fair Germany.
