Re: DER PISTOLE IST GELADEN!

Hello Rob,

I believe the DER has to be a DIE. The "Der", "Die", "Das" is somewhat complicated. For example: Die Pistole, Das Magazine, Der Schieser (Shooter).

Regards,

Wolfgang

Guten Tag! The German articles Der, Die & Das roughly

equate to Male, Female and Neuter gender of the objects to which the noun relates... This is not a pratice in the American English language.

The trick of using them correctly in German grammatical structure is knowing what objects are "he's", "she's" and "it's"

In this case Dieter is correct (duh!) ...witness the upper right corner of your screen > "die selbstladenpistole"

We do have sayings that are similar in English. When looking at a friend's luger you might say "She's a beauty" - applying feminine characteristics to an otherwise inanimate object... (wow that made my head hurt!)

regards from a student (but NOT a scholar) of the German language from 30+ years ago, - and that concludes our lesson for today...

wiedersehen!

John

Re: Guten Tag! The German articles Der, Die & Das roughly

Hello John,

Not to worry, Dieter, Wolfgang you almost had it right. My German is 47 years old and I can figure out some basics.

The 3 D's must be difficult when learning German as a second language. Learning to use "THE" for almost everything in English was much easier for me.

Reading Luger history in German has helped me to polish my native language. I must admit that some of it sounds strange, for example: Der General, Die Generale, Das Zimmer Des Generals. Die Pistole, Das Gewehr, Die Krankenschwester. Railroad tunnel in German "Der Tunnel" sounds wierd, richtig. THE is a nice, usefull, easy to use word. Enough, sorry.

Good to hear from you.

Regards, Wolfgang ( my friends can call me Dieter!)
