byf 42 question
1 Attachment(s)
I found a 42 byf that is said to be PORTUGUESE WW2 CONTRACT BYF 42 but on the photos I see no stamping that was not from the mauser factory. Is this something assumed? seller says that all of the 42 mauser lugers went to portuguese use. the mag is fxo with alumiinum bottom and not matching to gun, the grips are black plastic.

Kunta, Many of the last 1942 Mauser produced PO8s in the m & n suffix blocks were sold to Portugal or Bulgaria, since the newer P38s were then what the German military wanted. The black plastic grips on this luger appear to be Portugese replacements (wider uncheckered borders, courser checkering and I'll bet no threaded hole inside). Other than that, I would expect no specific Portugese marking, unless the barrel has been changed, and then it may be marked with a Portugese inspector's mark (9 or KK/a number in a circle). TH
