steel stock
In the Luger Forum Centerfolds section, October, is a .30 cal. gun with a steel shoulder stock. I have a fried in Az. who bought one just like it but doesn't know what it is. Can someone please give me some info on the history of this type of stock, i.e. issue, make, dates etc.. Thanks for the help.

Ideal Stock
If this is the photo you are referring to in the Old Luger Centerfolds... this is a Model 1900 Luger equipped with an Ideal Stock... Ideal being the manufacturer...
The stock is ambidextrious and can be worn on either side as a holster and extends to create a shoulder stock. The gun has to be equipped with matching grips that are made to accept the stock... the stock does not attach to the pistol, but to the grips. This stock can only legally be attached and use with the model shown... use of any other Luger with this stock/grip combination would be a federal felony of creating a short barreled rifle... You will find several examples of this stock in the Member Gallery. Do a search in the gallery for "IDEAL" as well as on the lugerforum... you will find all the info you are looking for. http://www.lugerforum.com/images/FrontPage/oct01.jpg |

Glen,
To expand on John's cautionary note, the Ideal stock/holster can be attached to a 1900, 1902, or 1906 Luger, but only the American Eagle variation. Congratulations to your friend, they are a very neat accessory. The Ideal stock/holster was patented in 1904 (1901 in Great Britain), and marketed until about 1910. One needs to be alert when looking at one of these--it is not commonly recognized amongst most Luger collectors that there were actually versions made for revolvers and Colt large-frame auto-loaders as well, and a Luger will not fit these. --Dwight |
Dwight, Where did you see that the Ideal stock was only legal (in US) on the Am.Eagle marked models, as the grips will fit on any of the grip safety models? TH

Tom,
BATF Firearms Curios or Relics List ATF P 5300.11 (3-2001) p.34 Your point about the U.S. legality is well noted. --Dwight |
