20) What parts must be numbered on a Luger?
The following parts should have serial numbers on them:
Frame, full serial number with suffix
Under barrel, full serial number with or without suffix
Left side of the receiver, full serial number without suffix.

All the following parts should have the last two numerals stamped on them:
Firing pin
Extractor
Sear bar
Breechblock
Front toggle link
Rear toggle link
Locking bolt (takedown lever)
Side plate (with a few exceptions through the years, see comments on side plate)
Trigger
Safety lever
Safety bar
Hold-open latch
Grips (inside)
Note, that the rear toggle pin was not serial-numbered until 1932.
There were two "styles" of serial number marking, Commercial style and Military style. In commercial style some of the numbers, notably the side-plate and locking bolt, were stamped underneath in a way which did not affect the surface look of the gun--military serial numbers were stamped on the visible surfaces. If your mismatched parts are stamped highly visibly they likely come from military guns.

What is the skinny on grips. I have a g date, 39 and 41 byf. none have the serial number on the grips. the 39 I cant find anything, the g date has no markings, and the 41 has only eagle over 655. is this acceptable, also my gdate is all matching but the hold open lever. the gun is in 95% condition and is very pleasing. how bad does the hold open lever being a different number on a gdate hurt it? thanks

thanks, found the info on the byf, cant find anything on the opinions on unmatched hold open for a g date. is there a FAQ on g date grips unmarked?

kunta, your G-Date grips may be just fine. The Germans didn't number the late G-Date grips from about the C-Block, maybe the D-Block on. You may find a few, but not many. The grip numbers appeared again in 1937, then grips were not numbered during the 1939 Code 42 Production. Again, you may find a few, but not many!! Your 41 byf grips shoud be numbered, but E/655 markings may be proper replacements!! Hope this helps!! :)

Kunta, Either your G date is ALL matching, or it's not. What number HO do you need? The problem with matching K date or early G date parts, is that the die set used on these is not as wide, as on Mausers that are 1936 and later. TH

I need HO 32, I have HO 24. If any one wants to trade? or has one for sale. thanks for the info, the byf 44 has some pitting on the bbl one sied. rest of gun is good. with a few minor freckles, not perfect but I dont think a bad deal for the price. My g date grip also has a Q on one grip. not to sure what that is about.
