Hi all. I've acquired a 1942 german HP with a problem; the fron site and barrel bushing are slightly loose.

My question is would you trust re-staking the front site to any average gunsmith or is this a job requiring a more specialist level of skill ?

The gun in question is all original and in nice shape so I don't want to run the risk of any damage to the original parts.

Tough to answer. If it were mine, I would leave it alone.

I normally do a little tig weld from the inside and it holds tight.....you can email, I can supply lot of references from LF alone....

Ok, I am going to ask a stupid question:

Could someone explain to me the barrel bushing arrangement of a German HP?
I have owned several non German HPâ??sâ??s over the years and none had barrel bushings- this being one of the parts Browning eliminatedâ??are the bushings pressed into the frame? Never having had a problem, I may have over looked this.
I was looking at the schematics on the Brownells web site and they donâ??t show a bushing either.

I have heard this misnomer many times, look at the slide at the muzzle, there ia a small machined in barrel band, have been here before I was not worried over his nomenclature..

Thanks for the comments guys. Now I'm confused; I've owned a couple modern HP's and never seen anything like this bushing myself !

Do I have some weird mod ? The 'bushing' I'm referring to is just like that of a 1911, but is held in place by the front sight which is staked through a hole in the bushing. The muzzle of the barrel rides through this bushing which is maybe 1/2" long.

I believe this is a mid 42 production gun which look righteous in all other aspects, has it been messed with ? I assumed it was just a production step streamlined out at a later date.


I just came across this auction and if you look at the muzzle picture and look at the tooling marks on the 'bushing' it does seem to be a seperate piece ?

Its not a seperate piece, it is a machined in place/part of the slide, band.

Still confused; the piece I have is definitely a seperate part, it can be moved within the front of the slide. The profile seem a match for later guns.

Can anyone help clarify this ? Possibly this is a repair ? Maybe the front of the slide was damaged and someone made a bushing to fit and staked it in place with the front sight.

I'll try to get pictures to post as I'm now much distressed !

From the photo, it looks like a separate part. I'm no expert, but I've handled more than a few Hi-Powers, and I've never seen anything like this. I'd really like to see more photos when you get the gun. Thanks for pointing this out!

Also, I wouldn't be in a hurry to change anything about this without more information.
