1939 42 code marked UW. BB Poli (S) on left hand side
The pistol is all matching to include magazine and has a paper attached labeled
"US Army Europe" Provost Marshal Firearm Retention Authorization (USAREUR Cir 643-70) All dated 1966 I know what the paperwork is, what is the "UW. BB Poli. (S)" marking on the left hand side of the lower mean? Thank for your time and assistance in advance. Regards, Burrell |
Burrell, welcome to the forum. Very odd marking, especially being on the left hand side. Normally unit or police markings are on the grip, however, the year of this model precludes police or unit marking, as they had quit marking by this time.
Sounds more like a GI's information, as he must have bought this from the PX and shipped it back... Can you provide digital pictures of this marking? Ed |
Ed,
Will try. http://forum.lugerforum.com/lfupload/mvc005f.jpg The pistol was reblued when I bought it. The left hand side appeared to have been ground on with a Dremel tool to remove some kind of marking. I was told the GI's info. Didnt make lots of sense with the paperwork still attached but I bit anyway. Since it had already been reblued I decided to draw file the grinding down to clean it up and the reblue it. As I started draw filing the writing started to appear. It looks as if it were done with an electro pencil as it has changed the composition of the metal and is harder than the surrounding material. It was papered in Bad Toelz ,Germany. |
Hi Burrell,
" Poli "means city in Greek. Possibly a Greek police pistol? |
There is a period after Poli "Poli." I believe for an abbreviation of Police. It would be even stranger for it to have been in Germany in '66 if it was Greek property just post WWII but I guess anything is possible.
