Police Bayonet

I bought this off of ebay recently, even nicer than he described and the pictures showed! I have a primary collection of Weimar Police Lugers, and like to pick up items that complement the collection. This is a brown leather sheath, which translates to being used by Rural Police.

The description on ebay said;

Listed is a German Rural Police dress bayonet. This is a quality example with nickeled solid fittings and shows great detail on the upper hilt and pommel. On the reverse of the quillon and on the reverse of the scabbard throat are matching "L.Mg.26." (Landjager Magdeburg 26 - Rural Constabulary, Magdeburg 26) The scabbard fittings are excellent and the brown leather sheath is nice with only typical minor blade tensioner bulge and creasing. The stag grips are excellent cutdown examples and the police emblem has extraordinary detail remaining. The best for last: the blade is beautiful! It is an ACS w/scales. (Alexander Coppel, Solingen)Both sides marked. A previous arsenal mark, looks like a "B" is on the spine. This one has the nicest blade of any I've owned. Only a very minor line down the groove where the tightener rides. I consider this piece to be up to the standards of most collectors.

Remarkably, I have the Luger that was issued with this bayonet listed in my database. It is a 29 DWM # 1752t with the same unit marking. Unfortunately, I got this off that old list of J.C.'s that I have and have no way of knowing who owns it. Buy the bayonet and you can start a lifelong search for the gun!
I am very happy, the blade is really nice. The "haze you see is either light oil, or condensation, it is in the 80's and it was very cool in the hotel room after I got back from working out!

Just below the nazi symbol is a hole, it would have held the weimar clamshell and/or weimar police eagle.

Hey Ed,

That's a nice one!

Ed, Really nice! Now you need the frog and Police knot to complete it..and the Luger of course. Jerry Burney

Another nice pointy object has found its way into the collection of a truly deserving individual. Congrats Ed, that one looks like a keeper.

Ron Smith 07-16-2006 11:31 PM

Ed,

Now, here's what you need to do.

Pick out your best Luger. Remove the emblem from the dagger and inlay it into the grips of the Luger.

Abracadabra!! You have Himmler's personal SS presentation pistol. You can post it on an auction for $35000.00 :D

Lyn Islaub 07-17-2006 12:25 AM

Ed,
I probably have an original period frog that will fit your Police blade. E-mail me your mailing address and I'll send one off to you.

Ron,

Himmler's personal SS pistol is sold semiannually at estate auctions in Ohio and Indiana. Sometimes it shows up as a PPK, sometimes as an HSc. I've not seen one that was a Luger yet.

HerbZ;)

Ron Smith 07-17-2006 05:44 PM

Herb,

There ya go, just have to be innovative.

Now it has become, "Himmler's little known and never seen before SS Presentation Luger." He can get another $2000 out of it.

Ed,

A very nice rural police bayonet. Now, here are the accouterments you need for it. This one is the municipal police bayonet with black scabbard and frog. You need a brown frog and the same NCO Portepee. One thing always leads to another, you know. Ya gotta collect the whole set. ;)

Ed, you sure got yourself on a slippery slope with this purchase! It'll probably cost you a gazillion bucks before its over. After you find the pistol, holster and matching mags and pay through the nose for them, you'll need all the accoutrements George noted, then an appropriate Landj¤gerei uniform and a mannequin to wear it all. Work hard!

Edward Tinker 07-18-2006 12:12 PM

:) oh well, boy, what a hobby :D

Don M 07-18-2006 02:32 PM

Of course, you could just send the bayonet to me and save yourself all the trouble and expense! ;)

Big Norm 07-19-2006 12:09 AM

And all this time I thought that frogs were green. Oh well, maybe they are different in Europe. Maybe a lot of black frogs were wacked with the scabbord and thats why it looks black in Ed's pictures.
Big Norm :D

My friend Lyn came through and boy does it look nice!

Thanks Lyn!!!

Ed,

Very nice! Now you just need to trade your Heer Troddel for a Polizei Portepee. The knot you have on it is an Army Troddel indicating the 14th Company (which was a training company for the regiment) attached to the staff.

Edward Tinker 07-24-2006 07:42 PM

Thanks George, didn't know what it was for ;) but I happily took it :)

I think I might have sent you the incorrect one. Let me check my records, as I had this one identified as a Police one and might have switched the tags. George is a better historian for the era and is likely be correct, so I'll see what I can find. In the interim, green looks good on it.

Here is the proper NCO Polizei Portepee for this bayonet. This one is unissued in the original paper wrap.
