I was looking at these prices (amazing, wish I had a trunk of them for that price ;)) and came across a catalog that I bought off of ebay 3 or 4 years ago and one that says SUHL :eek:

Heck, I didn't have this serial number in my database! And its sitting right on my own computer! :D

I don't remember, I have it at home, but only digital here with me. I think it was either 1957 or 1960?

Thanks Dwight, I know there are about 4 pages in this listing, but I just had these, and it turns out they are the same, but I have named them 3 and 5!! Let me look some more; here is one page I had.

Ed and Dwight... I would be cautious in using these serial numbers in your databases because back then there wasn't much emphasis placed on the suffix letter. I noticed that none on these pages indicate the suffix which implies that they didn't bother to record them... Using them in your database might not ensure accuracy I know both of you are looking for...

If I may add my 50 cents worth (adjusted for inflation from 2 cents), while I've known since the early 1960s that byf was a kind of code or short hand for Mauser, I never had any understanding of the suffix letter until I came upon this web site last month. I don't think my former level of ignorance concerning the suffix was particularly rare in the past, or in the present for that matter.

Already on top of that one. The 5-digit numbers are good, Alphabet Commercials without suffix are useless and I regretfully pass them up.

Herbz, it seems it has only been in the last two decades where those other than collectors have even become aware of the signifigance of the suffix letter... new folks to Lugers need to know that the suffix letter is an essential part of the serial number...

With most military models having 4 digits or less, repeated numbers are frequent for the military production of Lugers... the only thing that distinguishes one 9999 from another 9999 are the manufacturer's code, the year of manufacture, and the suffix letter... those things in combination are what make each military Luger unique...

Thanks, it still helps my data base, as I can have no suffix, or an "a" suffix...
