thomas,

The byf by far; 1916 DWMs are quite common.

I agree that the byf is made of the most modern steel of the century and will perform well... the 1916 DWM will certainly have seen more service and like have more wear. The steel it is made of while good, is not the modern alloy that the byf was made from.

OK, let an Imperial era guy wade in here. As far as "common" goes it is fairly close - approximately 123,000 byf 42 made (including those sold to Portugual and Bulgaria) vs. approximately 140,000 1916 DWM production. Looking at asking prices, the values are almost even as well. Considering the nearly 3 decades difference in production and two wars, I would think it would be much more difficult to find a 1916 in excellent condition than it would be to find a 1942 excellent example. Lastly, you know my preference...if it was made after 1918, it is a reproduction!;)

If you want a really old pistol, made with ancient material, go for the 1916. But if you want a modern pistol, made with the latest material go with the 41 byf. Mausers are the production Lugers; DWM Lugers are known as the trial and error models!! ;)

its gettin' ulgy...

Ron Wood 06-19-2006 03:00 PM

It may have been trial and error...but they ended up getting it right and doing it with elegance!

Well now you know which one Frank prefers and why...

and you also know which one Ron prefers and why...

Does Charly239 have a preference or is this strictly an exercise in economics?

both of Thomas's posting were short on information and both of them he stated "dvm". I'd be careful of buying a luger or selling one until you know the difference in companies. There is a DWM but not a DVM ;)

Ron Smith 06-20-2006 09:52 AM

Buy them both. Sell the 1916 to Ron, the byf to Frank. Then find a nice unit marked 1929 BKIW . ;)

I like Ron's idea!

The BYF if I were going to shoot it.
The DWM if it was just to look at.
Both if the price were right!!!

I believe that the Imperial Lugers are still the best ever made. IMHO
