Lost and Curious

I have just acquired a Lugar, It was purchased off a gunsmith 20 years ago for $300 by my Father in-law, it is a shooter and in descent shape. I would never dream of getting rid of it but I am curious of its history I looked at your Technical information but the date 1916 was not listed. Is there some where else on your web site (which is amazing) I could find this code or date to find the place of manufacture?
Thanks Joe

Yes Joe, there is a ton of information here. Welcome to the forum! You probably have either a DWM or Erfurt 1916 (manufacturer date) luger.

First, see these questions and see what you can answer about the Luger, notice the spelling it is named after Georg Luger.

Can you tell us any markings on the gun?

Proofs? (see on your left under tech information if you came through www.lugerforum.com) Tell us what and where proofs and markings are located.

There are forms in this section, where you can print out and then write down pertinent information.

What serial number is on the gun? To include any letters next to or under the serial number?

What year or letters are stamped on the top of the receiver?

What initials or letters are on the toggle?

Can you provide pictures, to include side, top, etc?

I printed out the Luger Identification form but I am at work I'll send the info tomarrow Only thing I remember is 1916 and I think the S/N 5065 and I know there is 3 or 4 little Proof marks I'll check that out with the Tech Info
Thank you for taking the time to help me

Joe, let me add my own welcome to the Lugerforum... Ed is pretty up on the early guns and will steer you to the right info.

Well the S/N is 5065 and 65 is stamped on everything but the toggle which has 85 stamped on it (so I guess thatâ??s a repair part)
The Toggle inscription is â??byfâ?
Chamber Inscription is 1916
I donâ??t know what a grip safety or a stock lug is but it does have a boss on the end of the grip that looks like some thing could slide up on to it.
I donâ??t see any marks for Caliber but we have used 9mm in it
The Thumb safety has â??Gesichertâ? stamped under it
The proof marks match with #15
The back has a 5065 with what looks like a g under it
On the left edge of the extractor looks like one of those birds, eagle whatever that is
I have some pictures but the file size on each picture is to big to down load for some reason

A "byf" toggle would be a WW2 era toggle, it is not matching to the 1916 dated gun, this will hurt the collectabilty and the price of the gun and put it the shooter category....I also want to welcome you here and hope you enjoy the Luger
