Police Re-Work Grip Replacement?
 

I looked at a 1916 1920 double dated police rework. Everthing matched but the left grip. It was mauser marked. Would that have been normal? Was it replaced from the cut for the safety?

By the way, the gun was in very nice condition, with a holster and two magazines, one that matched the gun and the other that matched the holster.

What would a resonable price be for this rig? There was a marked tool as well.

Capn, it depends on the shape, all original, etc. Pictures would help a lot, and when you say rig, is it with a holster, are there two magazines and are they police mags and / or matching?

It could be a $900 rig or a $1500 rig...

What are the assorted markings and do they match each other?

There is a holster. 1915 dated if I remember correctly. There was the tool, and one spare magazine with wooden bottom that matched the number of the holster on the base. The other magazine matched the numbers on the gun. I am more familiar with TR lugers. This one had an extra safety of a thinner spring metal in the top, pinned in. It seemed like original bluing, with strawed parts where you'd expect them. There were many small markings on all the metal parts of the pistol.

How do I ID a police mag?

It sounds like a police rework, although getting in for too much if not really sure could hurt ;)

A police mag would have a 1, 2 or 3 stamped "instead" of a +, however a WW! era wood magazine may have both.

Is it a police holster or a army holster?

Sounds like you got one complete matching gun and a seperate matching holster and clip? right....can you send pictures to help in your value estimate...

Capt. It sounds like your left grips has been cut out at the top of the forward edge for a mag safety. It's possible that a Mauser left grip was used when this WW1 PO8 was reworked, but most collectors would perfer to see this done to the original matching numbered left grip. TH

Good, then perhaps we can help, I sometimes buy rigs mismatched as this, put the police issue gun into my collection, and because holster and what ever spare tools ect are not matched....I sell them off to re-coop some of my money....hope this helps

Okay, here are some more details.

The holster is marked C. Holste & Sn. and dated 1918. All stitching is intact. There is a serial number marked on the holster of 9968. The tool is in the holster and marked S.S.I.V.39 and what looks like a "B" with a crown on top. The second magazine is serialized to the holster and marked "1". It has a wood bottom.

The pistol is an Erfurt. 1916/1920 dated. It has the sear safety still intact. The strawing is still present. The blueing is strong with wear where you expext it. All metal parts (I did not check the grip screws) are marked with the last two digits "32" and a "B" under a crown is all over it. The left grip is the replaced grip and has the cut for the mag safety. The magazine in the pistol is serialized to the gun and marked "2".

Well, how much are they asking?

Is the holster army style or police? Many times if there is a number on back, it is a police holster, plus with a #1 mag serialized to the holster that shows it is police. Is the tie down strap cross ways or from down to up to connect it?

$1300 out the door. The holster is serialized in front I think. I also thought the tie down was from bottom to top at an angle.

that would be "army" style, but doens't mean it isn't a police holster...

price sounds good to me, as long as it is original!

Well do you care to share the price with us....anyway I will step out and put my foot in mouth and try and make an estimate without seeing the rig...if the gun runs say 90/95% and is all original and matching right down to the small internal parts, bore say is nice to better condition, it could well go for $14/1500 alone, remember a missing HO could very well affect the price, so when I say all matching, I mean all there and matching, nice holster not needing any repair perhaps $250 and nice extra mag say perhaps $125.....now I hope not to upset you if you paid more, and your gun could be priced lower because something is a bit off....just shooting from the hip in an effort to help you in you buy....please let me know if I can help...and be real careful with the prices given here....best to ya

Sir, the price was $1,300 USD out the door.

It seemed reasonable with the tool, two magazines and holster. The bore was very nice. The internal parts were correct. I did not look to see if the grip screws were numbered. Only the mauser left side grip was not right. That was the one cut for the safety.

I wanted a nice Luger. This was the nicest example I had seen in a long time. I also would not have to peruse Ebay looking for a holster.

I may be able to get some pictures later today if the shop is not busy.
